Sony have officially announced the development of ‘SmartEyeGlass’, the new transparent lens wearable connects to smartphones and superimposes things such as text, symbols and images onto the user’s field of view. The glasses have a CMOS image sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope, electronic compass, brightness sensor and a microphone. The augmented reality wearable uses these features together with GPS to provide information customized to the user’s circumstances at that moment. The lens has a transparency of 85% and thickness of 3.0mm and does not have half mirror’s that obstructs the user’s view. The monochrome display ensures that even though the energy consumption is lower than a colour display, there is a high luminance of up to 1,000 cd/m2, giving clear readability in all environments. The SmartEyeGlass developer edition SED-E1 will be available from March 2015 in certain countries.
