Jazz Cartier drops ‘Opera’

Jazz Cartier uploaded is debut album ‘Marauding in Paradise’ on Soundcloud nine months ago and since then the Toronto born artist hasn’t looked back. Credited as “Toronto’s first post-Drake rapper” Jacuzzi La Fleur, with the help of producer Michael Lantz, produced a record illustrating the darker, villainous side of the ‘Six’ than the one we’re used to. It looks like La Fleur is ready to start where he left off. Opera sees Jazz team up once again with Lantz to bring you a track that absolutely has to be played with the volume up.
The production itself compliments Cartier perfectly. Lantz holds off at the beginning, implementing long, groaning strings that heighten the anticipation. When the song finally kicks off we are bombarded with heavy bass, powerful brass blasts and menacing, tip toeing keys.
The track goes hand in hand with the aesthetic we assume Cartier to have. It’s high energy and it’s out to be noticed. The auto tuned lyrics endorse the production completely. Comparisons are often drawn between Cartier and Travis Scott, and it’s easy to see why. Both are part of a unique group of new wave artists entering the scene, evolving the hip hop sound.
Furthermore, the theme of ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ is present throughout. The artwork displays a haunting, blood coloured Cartier in a dark theatre which ties in perfectly with the mood of the track.
This is the first preview we’ve had of any kind of project coming from Jazz in 2016, but if Opera is anything to go by, we should be keeping a close eye on the Toronto emcee. You can listen to Opera below.
