The KA & GRM Daily Rated Awards 2018 took place last night for the 4th time at the Eventim Apollo, Hammersmith. Hosted by Mo The Comedian and Julie Adenuga, the pair effortlessly presented the show, entertained the crowd, and indulged in a little spat with Naughty Boy!
The first award of the night was The Personality of The Year Award, which was awarded to Micheal Dapaah who has had a roller-coaster year with the sensational Mans Not Hot and, more recently, Man Don’t Dance. Dapaah broke through as the fictional rapper Big Shaq in 2014 with his mockumentary series SWIL. Since then he has levelled up and hasn’t looked back. Picking up the award, he said: “It’s mad, I just want to thank God for this. You know a couple of years ago we weren’t here and now we’re here – don’t let anyone stop you from what you want to do. Big up to the females in this category and all the other entertainers; big up yourself, this one’s for you”
Not3s took home the Artist of the Year Award. 2018 featured his album ‘Take Not3s II’. Taking to the stage, he said “You know this is mad man – big up everyone who was nominated, can’t lie that was a tough one and big up all of you.”
D Double E took home The GRM Legacy Award (Supported by BBC Radio1 Xtra) for his service to the indudsty over the last 15 years, D Double paved the way for some of the greatest grime artists to grace the stage. The award has topped off a great week for Double, following the release of his most recent album, Jackumm.
Other notable winners on the night included, Charlie Sloth for Radio DJ of the year (for the 4th year running), Best Video of the Year (sponsored by YouTube Music) went to Rapman. Best Track of the Year (sponsored by PRS for Music) to Aj Tracey & Not3s – Butteflies & Best Album of The Year to Nines for Crop Circle.
Speaking on the yellow carpet ahead of winning producer of the year, Steel Banglez said there should be more awards up for grabs for people working behind the scenes.
“I think we are the unsung heroes in terms of what we do for the artists,”
“I think people like the Mobos and the Brits should have producer categories and also songwriter awards as well. Because that’s a big part of tracks coming together.
