This interview with Dubz D has given us at Trapped Magazine a greater insight on what Dubz is bringing to the industry. Dubz D is a member of the Suave Society alongside Grafter, Loopz, Kieron Boothe, Karrizmah, Devs and Ghosty, however his grimy sound separates him from his musical peers. He gained our attention from his videos on YouTube shot by SBTV which have gained over 11k likes. We wanted to find out the reasoning behind particular tracks and his goals for the future, whilst also getting to know the real Dubz D.

How long have you been rapping and what made you start?

I’ve been rapping since I was like 13-14, now what made me start was when I purchased my first roll deep CD in HMV, to me they were too cold.

What inspires you as a person and as an artist?

For me one of my biggest inspirations is my mum, she’s been through a lot, I’ve seen her go through a lot and lord knows she’s always supported me when it comes to making music.

What are you bringing to the industry?

I don’t want to sound cliché about this but I’m bringing myself, a genuine person who believes there are no limits to what I can do in terms of creating music, plus I’m always smiling, I bring positive vibes with me everywhere I go. One of my strong points is that I’m versatile.

What genre would you place your music in?

Honestly I can’t say, I believe I’m very versatile. I’ll make a grime tune today and tomorrow I’ll be thinking about singing on a track. People do tend to put me in the grime genre a lot though, seeing as I’ve always been doing grime and I probably won’t ever stop making it either.

How would you describe yourself as an artist?

As an artist I would describe myself as someone who is divergent, and isn’t scared to take risks. I tend to experiment with music a lot, always trying something different.

What qualities do you think you bring to the Suave Society?

Large up my suave brothers. What I bring to the collective is the grime aspect of music, and not only that but I also bring my music tech knowledge, when working on projects in the team I mix down a few tunes.

What or who do you listen to on a regular basis?

I listen to a lot of UK music; I rarely take US artists in. In terms of who I listen to, there are too many names to mention, but after all these years I still zone out to Dizzee Rascals Boy In Da Corner album. Skepta, Banks, and I still zone out to soul for real lol they used to go in.

Why did you decide to make a track like; ‘Don’t Worry’

I made Don’t Worry to express my experiences I’ve had with women lol that might sound a bit mad but that’s the truth, big up my bro Eklipse on the feature too.

How are you feeling about the huge positive response from your SBTV Warm Up Session?

When it was first released I was excited I won’t lie. The response that I received was mental, I guess because them times people couldn’t put a face to my name. To everyone who watched, shared and showed love when that dropped thank you.

What was the concept for the track; ‘If You Need Me’?

If You Need Me was all about a past relationship I had, I never thought people would feel it too tough but in the end quite a few people enjoyed it and personally its one of my favourite tunes I’ve made, I made that song from the ground up.

How was shooting the video for your track; ‘Scatty’?

The shoot for scatty was livelyyy, the weather was good to go, I was with my bro’s, having a good time waved and that. The shoot didn’t last too long compared to other shoots, big up Dir. Lx legend in the making with his skills behind the camera.

What can your listeners expect from; ‘Late Nights In Grange’ … How many tracks? Any Features?

Late Nights In Grange is going to be sick. People can expect to hear some calm vibes, with some trippy elements to it, I don’t know how many tracks are going to be on there as I’m always making changes to the track list. Feature wise you’ll have some of the suave society on there and some local musicians I work with which you’ll come across soon.

When did you fall in love with music!?

I fell in love with music at a very young age, probably around the age of 4 or 5, back in the day when my mum would be playing bangers at home every Saturday, her vinyl collection is nuts believe me.
