One of the highlights of the LCM presentations this year for us was the Tourne de Transmission SS17, The
collection grew from a conversation between creative director Graeme Gaughan and NYC based contemporary artist Chris Dorland.
“We talked about our global influences,” explains Gaughan. “I look to eastern clothing customs, cutting and silhouettes and Chris reworks both commercial and bi-product media.”
Although not a collaboration with the artist, this collection is born out of this tête-à-tête, chopping up glossy imagery and billboard aspirations from the 90s–00s; a visual rush and the inevitable crash after it. The rallying cry? CHOOSE YOUR ESCAPE ROUTE->>>
“We have created huge billboard size vinyl poster prints,” explains Gaughan, “which we’ve deconstructed and used within the ready-to-wear, evoking ‘ejector seat’ ripcords on some of the looks. While the installation set by Art Director Johnny Buttons touches on the methods in which these old discarded western billboards are re-used throughout the 3rd world”
The collection realises archetypes in an alien way, with unexpected fabrics and detailing. Oversized rain ponchos and military parkas are made in premium tailoring fabrics. Biker jackets are stripped clean of their hardware. Candy coloured sweatshirting is turned inside out as a fleece texture. Kimonos and long shirts are offered in grunge plaid, with stepped hems, raw edges and patchworking running through the collection.
