Soul Purpose: Bringing back the Golden Age of Hip-Hop?

In the modern hip hop scene, especially in the UK, it takes something to set you apart from everyone

else. One such act is the collective known as Soul Purpose, from London, who bring positive vibes and a

great energy to match. The group, consisting of members Husk, AyiTe and Olly Hodding, alongside

vocalist Aikz, come with a soulful, funky sound, but are able to add an electronic feel which proves

to be a winning combination. Their biggest hit to date was their debut track ‘My Darling’ (produced

by Mike de Grout) which clocked up a reasonable view count on YouTube and was shared online by

the likes of Broken Culture, The 273 and GRM Daily;

“Always try my best to stay out of trouble, but I know guys that glass guys in bar fights.”

One thing that a lot of critics picked up on was the honesty behind the lyrics and the reality that the

4 man group were painting. They have kept true to this throughout their music releases and dropped

tracks ‘Eyes on Tomorrow’ and ‘Drums are High’, building a steady fan base throughout. Their

popularity led to them setting up and curating an event called Soul Food in March in Hackney which

drew in a large crowd and the announcement that they would be releasing their debut LP at the end

of May this year. The hype around the self entitled project intensified with the group releasing their

third single from the CD ‘Mic Check’ last month. The track is an upbeat and contemporary number,

with the video using footage from their Soul Food event as well.

“I’ve known this from the upset; nowadays nobody can have enough rep.”

The track gives us food for thought for the new releases and there seems to be big things on the

horizon for the group. Be sure to check out Soul Purpose when they next perform live at 93 Feet

East in Shoreditch on June 4th and follow them on Twitter at @SoulPurposeEnt
