Here at Trapped, we aim to make sure you guys are up to date on the best up and coming artists. One that has grabbed our attention recently is female painter Karima Alexander. She has not only captured our attention but also caught the eyes of US Def Jam entrepreneur Lex Pierre-Louis and London’s Capital Xtra DJ Manny Norte.
Lex Pierre-Louis posted a picture of himself admiring one of Karima’s paintings with the caption “Woke up this morning to a special delivery all the way from London. Received an exclusive piece of art from @karimaalexander! Thank you so much, this is amazing!” Manny Norte (Capital Xtra) who has toured with the likes of Jay-Z and Rihanna and played at the BRIT Awards after-parties, shared Karima’s work on twitter with the caption “New fresh artist alert!!!!”
Karima’s The SHE series contains eight mesmerising pieces finished with paint and embellishments ranging from 38” x 48” in size. She explains that SHE is a journey to where she is now, “Each painting represents a different stage/chapter of my life, which has shaped and developed me artistically.” She states that her generation’s emphasis on perfectly sculpted women has influenced her presentation of the female form in her work. She adds, “If I uncovered the models head, she would probably lose her vulnerability. I wanted to take something familiar and give it a whole different meaning. The video girl in your favourite rapper’s video may now look less sexy, or the girl with that amazing body and face you weren’t too keen on may have gained some appeal; you may just look and see a woman with a huge arse with her head covered. Whatever you see, you see something.”
