Welcome to the brand new monthly editorial piece, Trap Into The Music. Each month we will be bringing you an editoral piece based on music artist’s that have created a huge hype or a large buzz throughout the month. This will be based on anything from a new music project, a new single or a new album. We kick off the series with none other than singer-songwriter, Dawn Richard. Dawn Richard shook up January and planted new hope for all independent and unsigned music artists with her new release.

On January 15th 2015 we saw Dawn drop her brand new independent album “Blackheart”, which is the second instalment to come from her planned trilogy of records. It’s release came on the second year anniversary of her first independent and hugely successful solo album “Goldenheart”. Just like her first album this record also took the music scene by storm and has given hope to all independent and unsigned artists that are looking for success without a record labels backing.

Some of you may already know the name Dawn Richard from her group days when she was a member of the US all girl group, Danity Kane. Danity Kane were formed on MTV’s hit reality show, ‘Making The Band’ in 2006. The girls went on to release two number one albums and also bagged a Guiness World Record as the first all female group to have both their albums debut at the number one spot on Billboard. After Danity Kanes short, but successful run, Dawn went on to make up the trio that was Diddy Dirty Money alongside P Diddy Combs and Kalenna. The sound of Dirty Money was way before its time and got many mixed reviews from music critics and publications. With that said the group and their music was still successful world wide. During and after both groups Richard continued to grow her fan base with many different solo projects such as mixtapes and EPs. Her first independent and full record came in the form of Golden Heart which was critically acclaimed and showcased Dawn as a growing solo artist in her own right. After a two year gap and short reunion with Danity Kane the singer-songwriter came back with a bang and dropped her second solo project Blackheart!

Blackheart was released on January 15th 2015 and in a matter of hours the album shot straight to the number one spot on the iTunes Electronic chart, scoring Richard her second solo number one in the US. Not only was it successful in the Electronic chart but it also reached topped twenty in the overall US iTunes chart and top ten in the UK Electronic chart. Alongside the albums release the singer also dropped a visual titled “Tide: The Paradox Effect” which hit the number one video spot on iTunes as well. Not bad for an unsigned and independant artist made up of a team of two. No record label in sight yet a massive success. Most definitely something that deserves recognition and credit from all areas, and that is exactly what it got!

Critics, publications and fans went crazy for the new sound from this talented female and couldn’t praise her and the project enough. Blackheart is a sound created by Dawn’s inspiration from trip-hop, electro-pop and soul. It couldn’t be more different from Goldenheart but at the same time have a strong and clear connection to it. The beats go hard individually on each track and blend perfectly with Richard’s super cool and unique vocal sound. Dawn aint playing this time around and it really shows in this well designed and brilliantly put together album. It is just like Goldenheart and is a piece of art before its time. With that said it is music that should not be missed. The singer-songwriter had been writing and producing alongside Noisecastle III to bring you the perfect sound for Blackheart.

January was most definitely THE MONTH OF DAWN and we can’t wait to see what is next from this insane talent. Have you got your copy of Blackheart? Grab it on iTunes here and hit Dawn up on Twitter
