Newcastle born R&B singer and songwriter Jamilah is taking London’s breath away with her energy and amazing vocals. A strong focused artist, Jamilah left University with a PR degree and joined local girl group Desire in 2009. The four piece Newcastle group got to the judges houses stage of X factor, supported JLS , Taio Cruz and Lamaar, before parting ways in 2011. Jamilah embarked on her solo career, finding her true passion and love for music and eventually moved to London with her son to pursue her career full time. Describing herself as shy and just a Lass from up North, we grabbed ten minutes with her at London Music event ‘The Drop’.

How does it feel to be a solo artist now?

It feels amazing, I never imagined myself singing and then I thought if I did sing, I never imagined myself in a girl band, its crazy that I would be in girl band. I’m still learning, everything still feels brand new.

Who did you grow up listening to?

Boyz 2 Men, Celine Dion, Kenny G, Whitney Houston Mariah Carey

What’s the best part of being a Music artist?

Seeing your work come to life, its a long process, its like, so long but like seeing it all come together and working with people and everyone feeding off of each other. It’s so magical.

What’s the hardest part of being an Artist?

Never knowing, you never know when its gonna sound right you never know if people are gonna like it. You’ll never know if it’s gonna reach the masses, its so unknown. Nothing is promised, its all about chance, unless its your  passion and what you really want to do. Sometimes you find out that the artists that you love the most have been on the longest journey, for like 15 years before they released that song that you heard them on for the first time. So thats the hardest part, you never know how long its gonna take or if its even going to happen.

Where does your inspiration for writing new Music come from ?

Everything. All the songs I do have come from somewhere, there’s always something that has happened, something that I felt. Something in my life has influenced every single song that I have ever made.

Who would you like to write a song for and watch them sing it live?

Chris Brown

How does the London Music scene differ from the scene in Newcastle?

It’s like two different worlds, there’s no real scene in Newcastle, In London you have amazing shows every week you can go and see people with guitars just having these crazy sessions. Im in love with the London Music scene, in Newcastle you don’t have that, in London you have radio stations that support new talent like 1xtra, Bang, rinse and Reprezent Radio that involve artists and where they can promote your music, Theres nothing like that in Newcastle, which is why I moved here last year. Even the studios are different, the sound quality is different, theres no studios like that in Newcastle or at least I haven’t found them (laughs).

What can we expect from you this year?

I wanna be consistent with my Music and keep bringing my fans visuals, constantly be in peoples faces, working with artists, I just wanna be out there.
