U WOT BLUD? are a Forward thinking Bass music label Based in Hastings and run by our Resident Writer DJ Melinki, The label Provides a platform for talented new artists producers and Dj’s to breakthrough in to the mainstream. This interview is the Third in a four part series of interviews where we find out about the labels three young producers, for part three DJ Melinki sat down with Drone.

Tell us a brief history on yourself and how you got into music, did the dj’ing come first or the production?

I have always been into music from a young age. I’ve been playing guitar since I was about 11 and also used to play bass guitar in a band. I started DJing when I was about 15, then a couple of years later managed to get my hands on a copy of Fruity Loops. I didn’t have a clue what I was doing to start with, I taught myself the basics and just went from there really. I’m still learning new stuff everyday.

Top 3 tunes of all time?

I could be here forever trying to think of my all-time favorites. My 3 favorite tracks at this moment in time would have to be:

Murlo – Hydra

Notion – Chrome

Spooky Black – Without U

Your weapons of choice for producing ? daw, vsts , hardware , speakers etc.

I use Fruity Loops for producing and have done for the past 2 years. I love it, it’s so fun and simple. I also use a microkorg synthesizer (which has some amazing sounds on it) and a cheap little alesis drum machine which has some great samples on. For monitors I used Rokit KRK 5’s. I think nowadays though all you really need is a laptop and pair of headphones/monitors. It’s not what you’ve got, it’s how you use it.

Your biggest achievement to date?

Probably having tunes played on 1xtra/Rinse FM. I grew up listening to both radio stations and to have my music played on them is pretty crazy.

What’s in store for the rest of this year and what’s your ultimate goal?

Just to focus on production and continue to have fun making music that I enjoy.

Anything else you want to mention?

Thank you to anyone who has ever supported me. The best is yet to come!
