First A MOBO and Now…. Stormzy Wins a BET Award

2015 just keeps getting better for Stormzy as he won the BET Award for Best International Act. #TheProblem ousted Lethal Bizzle, Little Simz, FKA Twigs, Mnek & Fuse ODG, who boycotted the award show (but more on that later).

Before this, Stormzy had won a MOBO Award, sold his debut UK tour, went on stage with Kanye West at the Brits, performed on Jhools Holland & came third in the BBC’s Sound of 2015 list, and released his Dreamers Disease EP. Now he can add a BET award to that list, and rightly so. He joins Krept & Konan (go & buy Freak of the Week here and get that to #1- it’s just 99p), Wretch 32 & Tinie Tempah, who have also won the same award. With respect to the other artists, few have made more waves than Stormzy in the UK this year, so it’s good to see the right artist win the award.

Speaking of other artists, Fuse ODG explained his reasons for not attending with this tweet:

He could be referring to the fact Sam Smith won Best Newcomer Award, which was widely tipped to go to Fetty Wap. Actor Anthony Anderson picked up the award on Sam Smith’s behalf, who had this to say:

”Sam Smith isn’t here tonight because he’s white and didn’t think he would win at the BET Awards.” But you can make your own conclusions on that.

Still though, the first time I heard Stormzy was back in 2010 featuring in this anthem below, and I’m not one to lie on jump on any bandwagon. Back then if you said 5 years later Stormzy would be doing what he’s doing now, I wouldn’t of believed you. This one of those rare times I’m happy to be wrong, because what Stormzy is doing right now is something special. Not too many people can say they have a brighter future in the UK scene than Stormzy. Stay tuned for what’s coming next for him. because you know he’s gonna go in.
